How usage limits work

You don't pay per message on the subscription plans — instead each plan has a usage limit that caps how much you can do in a window of time. On Free and Pro, the limit resets every few hours, so if you hit it you wait a bit and continue. Max plans give you far more headroom with a larger weekly allowance — built for people who lean on Claude all day.

The big thing to know: Claude Code burns through limits faster than chat, because it reads files and works across many steps. If you use it heavily and keep hitting the wall on Pro, that's the signal to move up to Max — or to use the pay-as-you-go API instead.

Do I need to pay for Claude Code?

Yes. Claude Code needs a paid plan — Pro is enough to start, Max is better if you use it all day — or pay-as-you-go access through the API. The free tier covers the Claude chat app only. If you just want to talk to Claude in your browser, Free is plenty; if you want it editing real projects in your terminal, you'll need Pro or above.

API pricing (for developers)

If you build your own app on Claude, you pay the API per token (roughly ¾ of a word) rather than a flat monthly fee — split into cheaper input (what you send) and pricier output (what Claude writes back). Prices are per million tokens:

Model Input / 1M Output / 1M Reach for it when
Haiku ~$1 ~$5 Fast, cheap, high-volume simple tasks
Sonnet ~$3 ~$15 The balanced default for most work
Opus higher higher The deep reasoner for the hardest problems

Two big discounts are worth knowing: batch processing (for work that isn't time-sensitive) cuts rates by about half, and prompt caching can cut input costs by up to 90% when you reuse the same context across many calls.

which plan should you pick? Just curious or only chatting in the browser → Free. Using Claude daily, or you want to try Claude Code → Pro. Running Claude Code for hours and hitting limits → Max. A team that needs shared billing and admin → Team or Enterprise. Start low; it’s a one-click upgrade the day you feel the ceiling.
